Marmara Region

  • Geographical Meaning:

    • One of the seven geographical regions of Turkey, located in the northwest.

    • It takes its name from the Marmara Sea, which lies at its center.

    • It includes provinces such as Istanbul, Bursa, Kocaeli, Balıkesir, Çanakkale, Tekirdağ, Edirne, Yalova, and Sakarya.

  • Climate:

    • The region is influenced by three different climate types:

      • Black Sea climate (in the north, along the Black Sea coast)

      • Mediterranean climate (along the Marmara and Aegean coasts)

      • Continental climate (inland areas, eastern Thrace and southern Marmara)

  • Economy and Industry:

    • It is the most industrially developed region of Turkey.

    • Hosts major sectors such as automotive, textiles, food, and chemicals.

    • A significant portion of Turkey’s foreign trade is carried out through this region.

    • Home to historic capitals such as Istanbul (of the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman Empires).

    • A melting pot of different cultures, heavily influenced by migration, with the fastest-growing population in the country.

  • Strategic Importance:

    • The Straits (Istanbul and Çanakkale) connect the Black Sea, the Marmara, and the Aegean, making it a crucial transit point.

    • Holds strategic importance in terms of transportation, trade, and military presence.
